Overview
Magnum was developed in Germany as a high-alpha variety, designed for clean and efficient bittering. The variety isn’t typically know for its aroma but our Vermont Magnum features unexpected fruitiness and a freshness that brewers love. You can still use Vermont Magnum up front but you may also want to give it a shot in the whirlpool or dry hop to take advantage of its unique flavor and aroma.
All hops are grown, harvested, dried, pelleted, packaged and sold by Champlain Valley Hops in Starksboro, VT.

Magnum Hop Profile: Aroma & Flavor
Magnum is often considered an alpha variety, best known for its clean bittering potential. Its flavor and aroma are typically mild with notes of citrus and spice that make it quite versatile in a variety of beer styles. However, it has historically been used for bittering rather than for its aroma.
Our Vermont Magnum is very unique and has prominent sweet notes of lemon, raspberry tea and moss that add a lot of flavor to the mix besides bitterness. Brewers describe it as clean and fresh. Some of our customers enjoy using it in the dry hop to take full advantage of its unique aroma but many are drawn by its high alpha acid content and clean bittering potential.
Magnum Hop History
First bred in 1980 at the German Hop Institute in Hull (located in the Hallertau heartland of German hop production), Magnum continues to be extremely popular among German producers since its commercial launch in 1993. It’s distinctive for its hardiness and high yields, as well as its bittering punch.
It became popular in large part because it combines its high alpha acid content with a cleaner, less grassy sensory profile than traditional bittering varieties. Magnum is a combination of Galena (a high AA variety from the US) and a German-selected male.
While it’s not a dominant variety in the USA, Magnum is an underrated workhorse for bittering, and our crop actually serves as a dual-purpose variety!
